Burma Adventure

17 Days
Chiang Mai
Southwest
Chiang Mai
Myanmar
3,000 km

Overview

'This is Burma, 'wrote Rudyard Kipling. 'It is quite unlike any place you know about. ' Amazingly, over a century later, Myanmar retains the power to surprise and delight even the most jaded of travelers. Be dazzled by the 'winking wonder' of Shwedagon Paya. Contemplate the 4000 Sacred Stupas Scattered Across the Plains of Bagan Stare in disbelief at the Golden Rock at Mt Kyaiktiyo, teetering impossibly on the edge of a chasm. These are all important Buddhist sights in a country where pious monks are more revered than rock stars. Everywhere you'll encounter men wearing skirt-like longyi, women smothered in thanakha (traditional makeup) and betel-chewing grannies with mouths full of blood-red juice. People still get around in Trishaws and, in rural areas, horse and cart.

According to our motif to RIDE YOUR DREAM we expierence the country by motorcycle!

ITinerary

Day Description
Day 1 Arrival and airport pickup in Chiang Mai and hotel transfer.
Day 2 A long first riding day (left-hand traffic!) We avoid highways on the way to Mae Sot near the Myanmar/Burma border.
Day 3 After border formalities, which are usually expedited by our partner in Myanmar, we ride the first kilometers in a different world. After a varied ride (right-hand traffic), we reach the coastal town of Moulmein.
Day 4 Today we ride to Kyaiktho – sunset at the "Golden Rock" temple, an unforgettable experience!
Day 5 Before heading to the "living" capital of Burma, Yangon (formerly Rangoon), we take some final photos of the Golden Rock temple. Motorcycles are not allowed in Yangon – we take a bus into the city center. (By the way: the "real" capital of Myanmar is Naypyidaw, a planned city that is not very popular among the people of Myanmar.)
Day 6 We spend a full day marveling at the wonders of Yangon. The Shwedagon Pagoda is, for many, on par with landmarks like the Taj Mahal in Agra, India.
Day 7 Through a lowland region, we travel to Pyay, beautifully situated on the Irrawaddy River.
Day 8 Today we reach Bagan, another highlight of Southeast Asia, where we stay for two nights.
Day 9 Thousands of temples are scattered across the plains around Bagan. On our motorcycles, it’s easy to reach and explore the best ones. Stunning sunset photos are guaranteed! Optionally, a hot air balloon ride can be booked for the early morning hours to witness the sunrise (not included in the tour price). Prices range from $300–$400, depending on the package. Expensive, but well worth it.
Day 10 A scenic ride takes us via a detour to Mount Popa and then to Mandalay, where we stay for two nights.
Day 11 We visit Amarapura and have a photo session at the U-Bein Bridge, the longest teak bridge in the world. Dinner in Burma's second-largest city in the evening.
Day 12 A day of pure riding enjoyment takes us up to the plateau of Shan State, where we reach Inle Lake.
Day 13 Few will feel like getting back on the motorcycles today – the life and activity on the lake, observed during a full-day boat tour with extensive stops, is simply too fascinating.
Day 14 Deeper into Shan State and higher into the mountains: encounters with mountain tribes and perhaps a visit to a ruby mine await us in Taungyi before we later reach our accommodation in Mongping.
Day 15 Another beautiful day’s ride through the Shan State mountains brings us to Kengtung, picturesquely situated by a small lake.
Day 16 Not many tourists have seen the area we’ve traversed in the past days. That changes today – at Tachilek, we reach the border to Thailand. After a stroll (and shopping) at the market right by the border, we cross the river into Mae Sai (Thailand), where we’ll also spend the night.
Day 17 From Mae Sai, we return to Chiang Mai, where our adventure began. Ride Your Dream became a reality!
